For Day 4 of the 5 Fashion Frenzy Trends Lookbook, Tall Tales of Style took a blast from the past to discuss the hot trends of the good ole 90’s. I didn’t get a good whiff of the 90’s until about 94′-95′, when my mom started hopping on the trend of matchy-matchy. Yes, my sister and I dressed alike until I was about 12 years-old ( and we’re 5 years apart). But that’s besides the point, I still admired how great my mom looked when she got all dressed up. Skin tight dress (‘move somethin’ dress is what she called it), tailored pants, the structure of garments that had shoulder pads, high-waist denim, overalls and stretch pants (with the elastic band on the foot LOL) were among my favs- the list could definitely go on.

I created a set that embodied just a few of my favorite trends, let’s take a look.

I had clueless in mind with the first set. Like many girls, clueless was my favorite show. Not only for the fashion, but their “valley girl” accents, the fabulous one push of a button closet, and awesome friends. So it was only right that Clueless be a focal point. Metallic was big in the 90’s and boxy dresses were too. I love this shift dress it’s adorably awesome especially with the shoes. Doesn’t the shoes scream 90’s? The chunky buckles and heel fits perfectly with the clueless theme. I envisioned a long high ponytail- it’s very Cher-esque. Bold lippies were pretty popular in the 90’s, it was only right that I added a bold blue lip to this ensemble. The earrings add a pop of color to the set, just a bit to break up the blue theme but subtle enough to flow with the outfit. This set is very fun and flirty and one of my favs.

For the next set, I focused on the tailored look. I love the 90’s tailored pant, it was so sophisticated and chic especially in white. I paired it with a white mesh shirt which was also a big hit in 90’s. The nude wedges put me in the mind frame of Mules, and when I say my mom had every type of Mule shoe, she absolutely loved them. The messy halo fish tail braid and the pastel purple lip, adds a soft look to this set. I chose this knapsack because it reminded me of the “bucket bag,” the bucket bags were the “it” bags to have in the 90’s and it’s making a come back. I like how white, nude and gold stands out, so I made sure I kept accessories to a minimal. The gold earrings and necklace is just enough to make this outfit stand out.

90’s grunge is what I went for with the last set. When I think of 90’s grunge I think of boots, buckles, shirts tied around the waist, leather arm accessories, amongst other things. I wanted this look to be sexy grunge, so I added a black slinky bodycon dress and holographic boots – in which I’m so in love with. The straps on the boots and chunky heel gives it the grunge look I was looking for. I wasn’t for sure how I would like holographic with gold, but it went perfect. The caged arm cuff and ear cuff flowed nicely with this set. I envisioned a messy bun with this look and gold, edgy and retro sunglasses to top it off. And let’s not forget about this lip! What screams bada** without a black lip? My point exactly…

What re some of your favorite 90’s trends? What do you wish to see make a come back?
